Why 404 traffic can keep a website slow after a spam clean-up

Removing spam pages does not stop every request for them. Bots, search crawlers and old links may keep asking for URLs that no longer exist.

Missing pages still create work

A normal WordPress error page can load plugins, query the database and render a full theme. Repeated missing-URL requests can consume capacity even after the infection itself has been removed.

Where 404 Guard helps

404 Guard handles eligible missing URLs early with lightweight responses. Its Safe URL index tracks legitimate content and updates as content changes. Monitor only records activity; Confirmed 404 cache speeds up repeat requests after WordPress confirms a missing URL; Strict protection can handle eligible missing URLs from the first request.

Test before using strict protection

Check legitimate pages, products, archives, pagination, redirects and shopping-cart behaviour. Review protected and unprotected requests, logs and performance history. Missing-file controls, recognised redirect rules and CSV exports help with diagnosis and reporting.

Measure your own result

Supplied examples include 980 ms versus 300 ms for a normal 404, and 5,000 ms versus 589 ms in a test of 20 consecutive requests under load. These are examples, not guarantees. 404 Guard reduces wasted processing; it does not remove malware, repair links or replace a firewall.
